Some of Ivana and Carmen Corley’s best memories as youth tennis players came from their participation in the New Mexico School State Tennis Championships. During all of their years in High School they were participating and winning state championships in singles and doubles.
With the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020, Spring sports were cancelled. There were no state tennis tournaments. The Corley’s saw this as a major disappointment for their peers that were not able to share the memories as they had done previously.
Their vision was to hold a tournament, when able, to help fill the void, for graduating Seniors and varsity tennis players in the state of New Mexico. That vision became a reality, with the assistance of her father Eddie Corley Jr. and many others, and the inaugural Corley Cup was held in Fall of 2020.
$10,000 in scholarships were awarded based on success and sportsmanship. An additional $20,000 plus was donated to New Mexico charities primarily supporting underserved youth in New Mexico.
Out of this came an even greater vision to enlarge their footprint and help New Mexican youth, give a voice to the lost, and eradicate classism and racism both on and off the tennis courts. Thus, The Corley Cup has become an annual event.
